DESCRIPTION:The development of quantum technologies raises important questi
	ons of power\,\nethics and policy\, particularly with regards to cryptogra
	phy. Personal privacy\nand freedom\, economic and social equality\, warfar
	e and geopolitics are all at\nstake. Post-quantum cryptography has been de
	veloped to address these\nvulnerabilities\, but companies\, governments an
	d institutions are still in the\nprocess of making their IT systems quantu
	m-safe. The so-called “Quantum Threat\nTimeline\,” “Q-Day\,” or the “Crypt
	ography Apocalypse” are known by experts but\nnot by the general public. A
	ccordingly\, our panel will discuss the social\,\npolitical\, and economic
	 challenges surrounding (post-)quantum technologies.\n\nThe vulnerability 
	of digital society is in part the result of our dependence on\ndata encryp
	tion\, and concerns privacy in online messaging\, browsing\, data\nstorage
	\, signatures and identity verification\, hardware and critical\ninfrastru
	ctures\, financial transactions and public services. During this event\,\n
	different experts will evaluate policy proposals and research centred on\n
	post-quantum cryptography for preserving privacy\, fundamental rights\, an
	d the\ndigital infrastructures on which society relies. They will examine 
	questions of\nEU law and policy\, sovereignty\, and governance. Ultimately
	\, the panel will\nexplore the high-stakes struggle for security in the po
	st-quantum era\, in which\nnational governments\, big tech\, and the milit
	ary are contending to become\nquantum-ready before any abuse of power aris
	es.\n\n\nSPEAKERS\n\nMatteo Fabbri is a postdoctoral researcher at the Ins
	titute for Logic\, Language\nand Computation (ILLC)\, working on the Quant
	um Impact on Societal Security\n(QISS) project\, and a fellow at the Insti
	tute for Information Law (IViR)\, both\nat the University of Amsterdam. Hi
	s research focuses on platform regulation\, the\nethics of digital technol
	ogies\, and cybersecurity policy. His interdisciplinary\nbackground spans 
	philosophy\, digital social science\, EU law and human-computer\ninteracti
	on.\n\nPaolo Cirio works at the intersection of art\, technology\, activis
	m\, and policy.\nUsing journalistic\, scientific\, and artistic methods\, 
	he translates complex\nsystems and hidden forms of power into artworks tha
	t invite public debate and\ncollective agency. Cirio has exhibited in inte
	rnational museums and his actions\nhave been covered by hundreds of media 
	outlets.\n\nJoris van Hoboken (moderator) leads the Law and Governance of 
	Quantum\nTechnologies group at the Institute for Information Law\, where h
	e is Full\nProfessor of Information Law with special emphasis on Law and D
	igital\nInfrastructure. He works on a variety of questions at the intersec
	tion of law\nand digital infrastructure\, including quantum technologies\,
