DTSTAMP:20260820T195001Z
DTSTART:20270201T183000Z
DESCRIPTION:South Asian influences in dark folk-pop\n\nSheherazaad creates
music about language\, femininity and the feeling of not\nquite belonging
anywhere. The American-Indian composer and theatre maker grew up\nin Calif
ornia\, divides her time between India and Brooklyn\, and sings mainly in\
nUrdu\, supplemented by English and Tamil. On her EP ‘Qasr’\, produced by
Arooj\nAftab\, she brought her cinematic folk-noir together for the first
time in a\nworld of her own.\n\nOn her debut album ‘Khudgarzi’\, due for r
elease on 20 November\, she explores the\nspace between self-sacrifice and
self-preservation. The title means\n‘selfishness’ and refers to the image
of the ‘selfish woman’: someone who\nprioritises her own freedom over the
expectations of others. The ten tracks were\nwritten following a broken e
ngagement and navigate through anger\, guilt\, grief\nand the possibility
of a fresh start.\n\nMusically\, Sheherazaad works with instruments from H
	industani\, Turkish\, Arabic\nand Carnatic traditions\, including the tanb
ur\, santoor\, veena and rabab. She\ncombines these with ambient sounds\,
silence and dark pop. The first single\,\n‘Andher’\, immediately sets the
tone: a grand\, almost gothic declaration of love\nto darkness.
