DESCRIPTION:Opening of Searching for the Underground\, a multidisciplinary
installation by\ncomposer Kate Moore at De Poorthuisjes\, with a live perf
ormance by Moore.\n\n\nSEARCHING FOR THE UNDERGROUND\n\nSearching for the
Underground is a multidisciplinary installation by composer\nKate Moore at
De Poorthuisjes in Amsterdam. Developed during her residency with\nOde aa
n de gemeenschap\, the work explores the sounds of the garden at the Van\n
der Pek housing block and the hidden world beneath it.\n\nDuring her resid
ency with Ode aan de gemeenschap\, Moore has turned her attention\nto the
semi-enclosed garden of the Van der Pek housing block. Using audio\nequipm
ent\, she explores the hidden world beneath the surface of this urban\noas
is. Through this artistic research\, Moore becomes part of the everyday li
fe\nof the Van der Pek block by listening to the sounds that converge in t
he garden\nfrom the surrounding apartments. As the residents themselves do
not have access\nto the garden\, she occupies a unique position since she
can experience a form of\ncollectivity that remains hidden from others. T
his preliminary research will\nlead to Moore’s next project\, The Undergro
und: An Unseen Opera\, which will be\npresented at the Oranjewoud Festival
\, a contemporary music festival in\nFriesland\, in May 2027.\n\n\nKATE MO
ORE\n\nKate Moore is an internationally acclaimed Australian-Dutch compose
r whose work\nexplores the physical qualities of sound and its relationshi
p to space\, time and\nperception. Her compositions often develop through
repetition and gradual\ntransformation\, drawing attention to subtle chang
es in texture\, rhythm and\nresonance. Alongside composing for musicians a
nd ensembles\, Moore creates sound\ninstallations and site-sensitive works
that respond to their surroundings.\n\nBorn in Oxfordshire (England) in 1
979 and raised in Australia\, she has lived and\nworked in the Netherlands
since 2002. Her compositions balance between\ncontemporary classical musi
c and experimental sound art. She often seeks\ninnovative sounds by combin
ing traditional instruments with unconventional\nobjects made of metal or
ceramic. She founded her own ensemble\, the Herz\nEnsemble. Her works are
also performed worldwide by leading ensembles and\norchestras such as Asko
	|Schönberg\, HIIT/Slagwerk Den Haag\, the Netherlands Radio\nPhilharmonic
Orchestra\, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra\, the Groot Omroepkoor\n(Netherl
ands Radio Choir)\, and the Netherlands Chamber Choir. Her compositions\nh
ave been presented at venues and events including the Holland Festival\,\n
Muziekgebouw\, TivoliVredenburg\, and the Sydney Opera House. In 2017\, sh
e\nreceived the prestigious Dutch Matthijs Vermeulen Prize for composition
\,\nfollowed by the Gieskes-Strijbis Podiumprijs in 2022.\n\n\nODE AAN DE
GEMEENSCHAP\n\nOde aan de gemeenschap is a year-long programme at De Poort
huisjes that brings\nprofessional artists and local residents together. Th
rough four artist\nresidencies\, the programme explores the contemporary m
eaning of community and\nthe ways in which people connect\, share knowledg
e and create together. The\nartists-in-residence are Roberta Maimone (Spri
ng 2026)\, Arie Syarifuddin (Summer\n2026)\, Kate Moore (Autumn 2026)\, an
d artist duo Mangano & Van Rooy (Winter\n2027). Klazina\, the housing offi
cer\, guides the projects and hosts the\nKlazien-o-theek.\n\nDe Poorthuisj
es are two former gatehouses of the Van der Pek housing block.\nBuilt in 1
912\, the buildings are now used for art and community projects in\nAmster
dam Oost. De Poorthuisjes are operated by Stichting LOLA.\n\n\nPROGRAMME\n
