DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, 7 November 2026\, Searching for the Underground\,
a multidisciplinary\ninstallation by composer Kate Moore\, opens at De Po
orthuisjes in Amsterdam.\nDeveloped during her residency with Ode aan de g
emeenschap\, the work explores\nthe sounds of the garden at the Van der Pe
k housing block and the hidden world\nbeneath it. The opening takes place
at 16.00 with a live performance by Moore.\n\nDuring her residency with Od
e aan de gemeenschap\, Moore has turned her attention\nto the semi-enclose
d garden of the Van der Pek housing block. Using audio\nequipment\, she ex
plores the hidden world beneath the surface of this urban\noasis. Through
this artistic research\, Moore becomes part of the everyday life\nof the V
an der Pek block by listening to the sounds that converge in the garden\nf
rom the surrounding apartments. As the residents themselves do not have ac
cess\nto the garden\, she occupies a unique position since she can experie
nce a form of\ncollectivity that remains hidden from others. This prelimin
ary research will\nlead to Moore’s next project\, The Underground: An Unse
en Opera\, which will be\npresented at the Oranjewoud Festival\, a contemp
orary music festival in\nFriesland\, in May 2027.\n\n\nKATE MOORE\n\nKate
Moore is an internationally acclaimed Australian-Dutch composer whose work
\nexplores the physical qualities of sound and its relationship to space\,
time and\nperception. Her compositions often develop through repetition a
nd gradual\ntransformation\, drawing attention to subtle changes in textur
e\, rhythm and\nresonance. Alongside composing for musicians and ensembles
\, Moore creates sound\ninstallations and site-sensitive works that respon
d to their surroundings.\n\nBorn in Oxfordshire (England) in 1979 and rais
ed in Australia\, she has lived and\nworked in the Netherlands since 2002.
Her compositions balance between\ncontemporary classical music and experi
mental sound art. She often seeks\ninnovative sounds by combining traditio
nal instruments with unconventional\nobjects made of metal or ceramic. She
founded her own ensemble\, the Herz\nEnsemble. Her works are also perform
ed worldwide by leading ensembles and\norchestras such as Asko|Schönberg\,
	 HIIT/Slagwerk Den Haag\, the Netherlands Radio\nPhilharmonic Orchestra\,
the Sydney Symphony Orchestra\, the Groot Omroepkoor\n(Netherlands Radio C
hoir)\, and the Netherlands Chamber Choir. Her compositions\nhave been pre
sented at venues and events including the Holland Festival\,\nMuziekgebouw
\, TivoliVredenburg\, and the Sydney Opera House. In 2017\, she\nreceived
the prestigious Dutch Matthijs Vermeulen Prize for composition\,\nfollowed
by the Gieskes-Strijbis Podiumprijs in 2022.\n\n\nODE AAN DE GEMEENSCHAP\
n\nOde aan de gemeenschap is a year-long programme at De Poorthuisjes that
brings\nprofessional artists and local residents together. Through four a
rtist\nresidencies\, the programme explores the contemporary meaning of co
mmunity and\nthe ways in which people connect\, share knowledge and create
together. The\nartists-in-residence are Roberta Maimone (Spring 2026)\, A
rie Syarifuddin (Summer\n2026)\, Kate Moore (Autumn 2026)\, and artist duo
Mangano & Van Rooy (Winter\n2027). Klazina\, the housing officer\, guides
the projects and hosts the\nKlazien-o-theek.\n\nDe Poorthuisjes are two f
ormer gatehouses of the Van der Pek housing block.\nBuilt in 1912\, the bu
ildings are now used for art and community projects in\nAmsterdam Oost. De
Poorthuisjes are operated by Stichting LOLA.\n\n\nPROGRAMME\n\nExhibition
