DESCRIPTION:Finissage of Searching for the Underground\, a multidisciplinar
y installation by\ncomposer Kate Moore at De Poorthuisjes\, with a live pe
rformance.\n\n\nSEARCHING FOR THE UNDERGROUND\n\nSearching for the Undergr
ound is a multidisciplinary installation by composer\nKate Moore at De Poo
rthuisjes in Amsterdam. Developed during her residency with\nOde aan de ge
meenschap\, the work explores the sounds of the garden at the Van\nder Pek
housing block and the hidden world beneath it.\n\nDuring her residency wi
th Ode aan de gemeenschap\, Moore has turned her attention\nto the semi-en
closed garden of the Van der Pek housing block. Using audio\nequipment\, s
he explores the hidden world beneath the surface of this urban\noasis. Thr
ough this artistic research\, Moore becomes part of the everyday life\nof
the Van der Pek block by listening to the sounds that converge in the gard
en\nfrom the surrounding apartments. As the residents themselves do not ha
ve access\nto the garden\, she occupies a unique position since she can ex
perience a form of\ncollectivity that remains hidden from others. This pre
liminary research will\nlead to Moore’s next project\, The Underground: An
Unseen Opera\, which will be\npresented at the Oranjewoud Festival\, a co
ntemporary music festival in\nFriesland\, in May 2027.\n\n\nKATE MOORE\n\n
Kate Moore is an internationally acclaimed Australian-Dutch composer whose
work\nexplores the physical qualities of sound and its relationship to sp
ace\, time and\nperception. Her compositions often develop through repetit
ion and gradual\ntransformation\, drawing attention to subtle changes in t
exture\, rhythm and\nresonance. Alongside composing for musicians and ense
	mbles\, Moore creates sound\ninstallations and site-sensitive works that r
espond to their surroundings.\n\nBorn in Oxfordshire (England) in 1979 and
raised in Australia\, she has lived and\nworked in the Netherlands since
2002. Her compositions balance between\ncontemporary classical music and e
xperimental sound art. She often seeks\ninnovative sounds by combining tra
ditional instruments with unconventional\nobjects made of metal or ceramic
. She founded her own ensemble\, the Herz\nEnsemble. Her works are also pe
rformed worldwide by leading ensembles and\norchestras such as Asko|Schönb
	erg\, HIIT/Slagwerk Den Haag\, the Netherlands Radio\nPhilharmonic Orchest
ra\, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra\, the Groot Omroepkoor\n(Netherlands Ra
dio Choir)\, and the Netherlands Chamber Choir. Her compositions\nhave bee
n presented at venues and events including the Holland Festival\,\nMuziekg
ebouw\, TivoliVredenburg\, and the Sydney Opera House. In 2017\, she\nrece
ived the prestigious Dutch Matthijs Vermeulen Prize for composition\,\nfol
lowed by the Gieskes-Strijbis Podiumprijs in 2022.\n\n\nODE AAN DE GEMEENS
CHAP\n\nOde aan de gemeenschap is a year-long programme at De Poorthuisjes
that brings\nprofessional artists and local residents together. Through f
our artist\nresidencies\, the programme explores the contemporary meaning
of community and\nthe ways in which people connect\, share knowledge and c
reate together. The\nartists-in-residence are Roberta Maimone (Spring 2026
)\, Arie Syarifuddin (Summer\n2026)\, Kate Moore (Autumn 2026)\, and artis
	t duo Mangano & Van Rooy (Winter\n2027). Klazina\, the housing officer\, g
uides the projects and hosts the\nKlazien-o-theek.\n\nDe Poorthuisjes are
two former gatehouses of the Van der Pek housing block.\nBuilt in 1912\, t
he buildings are now used for art and community projects in\nAmsterdam Oos
	t. De Poorthuisjes are operated by Stichting LOLA.\n\n\nPROGRAMME\n\nExhib
