DESCRIPTION:Most of us have an old phone collecting dust in our drawers. Th
is isn’t at all\nbecause it’s no longer functional. Rather\, it is the con
sequence of a market\nstrategy called ‘planned obsolescence’\, which is de
ployed by the ICT industry to\nincrease the sales of newer devices by maki
ng working hardware seemingly\nuseless. But one man’s trash is another man
’s treasure.\n\nWhile their battery might be old\, their camera depreciate
d\, and their operating\nsystem no longer supported\, smartphones are stil
l computers with enough power to\nperform complex tasks. Trashing them is
	not only a (e-)wasted opportunity\, but\nalso a detriment to our ecosystem
. What can we do with all these devices?\n\nTo open the conversation and a
nswer this question with a concrete application\,\nthis workshop explores
the possibility of creating new digital music instruments\nbased on old sm
art phones.\n\nOver two days you will learn how to repurpose old and cheap
smartphones into\nfunctional synthesisers. You will go through all the st
	eps needed\, discover the\njoys of granular synthesis\, Messiaen’s modes o
f limited transposition\, and learn\nhow to work with open-source software
such as PostmarketOS and Pure Data. At the\nend of the workshop\, and pos
sibly a small attempt to play all together\, you can\nfinally go back home
with your own custom synthesiser that’s too cool to stay in\na drawer.\n\
