DESCRIPTION:How do we define modification when living things are already co
nstantly shaped\nby their environment? HSURAE brings this debate to life a
t Mediamatic through\ntwo compelling works during Museumnight.\n\nIdeas ar
ound place and placelessness are animated in the two works via the\nflower
Helichrysum italicum\, aka Immortelle. This plant has long been prized fo
r\nits anti-aging properties. Historically\, its value lies in its relatio
nship to\nplace: wild blooms from Corsica yield different essential oil pr
ofiles than\nthose from Croatia. Today\, biotech labs are changing that st
ory by making it\ngenomically legible\, growing its cells in petri dishes\
, and using engineered E.\ncoli to produce its precious compounds without
ever needing the plant or its\nsoil. In other words\, the plant is becomin
	g placeless.\nEnlarge\n[https://www.mediamatic.net/image/2026/10/6/she_doe
