SUMMARY:(PRE)FIGURING FASCISM #3: The State of Exception in Which We Live –
Lessons from the Black Radical Tradition’s Analyses of Fascism

DTSTART:20260611T150000Z

DESCRIPTION:THURSDAY\, 11 JUNE\, 2026 – 17:00 TO 19:00\n\nFascism and autho
ritarianism are often framed as a danger in the future that\nparadoxically
resembles a relapse into the past: If we do not defend our\ndemocracy now
\, we might experience again what we believed to have left behind.\nInform
ed by the interventions of black radical thinkers and activists such as\nW
	.E.B. Du Bois\, Aimé Césaire\, Bobby Seale\, and Angela Davis\, this talk
proposes\na different understanding of the temporality of fascism: fascism
and liberal\ndemocracy are not opposites but can coexist. The liberal dem
ocracy of some is at\nthe same time the fascism for others. We will togeth
er talk about some of the\npolitical and strategic implications of this cl
aim.\n\n————-\n\nDaniel Loick teaches social and political philosophy at t
he University of\nAmsterdam. He is interested in critiques of state-inflic
ted violence (police\,\nprison\, borders) and the politics of forms of lif
	e. He is Principal Investigator\nof the research project “Emergencies of A
uthoritarianism”.\n\n————-\n\n(Pre)Figuring Fascism is a series of talks d
rawing attention to the continuities\nbetween liberal governance and fasci
sm\, hoping to stimulate an understanding of\nfascism as it relates to col
	onialism\, imperialism\, and capitalism – rather than\nviewing it as a kin
d of shock to an otherwise well-working liberal system.\nBecause we know:
So long as the conditions for fascism’s emergence are not\novercome\, we a
re always living in proto-fascist times.
