DTSTART:20260501T150000Z
DTEND:20260501T170000Z
DESCRIPTION:It’s been a decade since the Balkan Route was declared “closed”
by the EU. What\nfollowed\, however\, has been a surge of investment: mor
e funding for policing\,\nexpanded infrastructures of securitization\, and
a growing archipelago of\ndetention across the region. This talk traces h
ow a once relatively open\ncorridor has been remade into a fragmented and
intensely controlled landscape of\nsurveillance\, confinement\, and expuls
ion through alliances between EU\ninstitutions\, Balkan states\, internati
onal organizations\, and commercial actors.\n\nDrawing on long-term engage
ment\, the discussion examines what the EU’s new\ndeportation bill will me
an for the region and people crossing it\, arguing that\nit will further e
ntrench its role as a border guard in the EU’s evolving border\nregime.\n\
	n—————\n\nNidžara Ahmetašević is a journalist\, scholar\, and activist. Sh
e is the author of\n“The Media as a Tool of International Intervention: Ho
use of Cards“ (Routledge)\nand co-author of the report Repackaging Imperia
lism: The EU-IOM border regime in\nthe Balkans. She lives and works in Sar
ajevo.\n\nManja Petrovska is researcher at the University of Amsterdam and
co-author of\nthe of the study Repackaging Imperialism: The EU-IOM border
regime in the\nBalkans.\n\n—————-\n\n(Pre)Figuring Fascism is a series of
talks drawing attention to the continuities\nbetween liberal governance a
nd fascism\, hoping to stimulate an understanding of\nfascism as it relate
	s to colonialism\, imperialism\, and capitalism – rather than\nviewing it
as a kind of shock to an otherwise well-working liberal system.\nBecause w
e know: So long as the conditions for fascism’s emergence are not\novercom
e\, we are always living in proto-fascist times.
