DESCRIPTION:Seaweed is a crucial part of the sea\, nourishing the water whi
le also providing\na habitat for underwater life. When we think billions o
f years back\, the sea was\nthe starting point of life on Earth. Early cel
ls formed alliances with\nphotosynthesizing organisms that later became al
gae. Without the evolution of\nalgae\, neither breathable air nor humans w
ould exist.\nIn (s)kins of the sea\, Linda Zimmermann uses this allegory t
o process algae into\na ceramic glaze\, a skin for ceramics. Together with
Limu Cosmetics\, she presents\nhow she weaved the material research into
her artistic practice. This research\nwas developed in collaboration with
	Limu Cosmetics\, who are currently\nengineering a seaweed-based sunscreen
that not only protects human skin\, but\nalso remains non-toxic to marine
life\, allowing the material to serve both\npeople and the ecosystems it o
riginates from. These material research projects\nare part of the STARTS E
	U initiative\, which aims to connect science\, art\, and\ntechnology.
