DESCRIPTION:On show at Framer Framed from 30 October 2026 to 17 January 202
7\, the exhibition\nLife After Love: In Search of the Militant Image surve
ys how the visual grammar\nof militancy has shifted across the global upri
sings of the past decade. Curated\nby Hera Chan and Edwin Nasr\, the exhib
ition traces resonances between struggles\nthat have unfolded from Hong Ko
ng to Beirut\, and from Yangon to Jenin\, bringing\ntogether artists\, cul
tural workers and community organisers.\n\nLife After Love asks what the c
hanging forms of political struggle reveal about\nthe changing forms of im
age-making. If the militant image of the twentieth\ncentury emerged alongs
ide mass party politics\, anti-colonial liberation\nmovements and the proj
ect of revolutionary cinema\, what becomes of that\ntradition within a con
juncture shaped by digital platforms\, algorithmic\ncirculation and decent
ralised forms of political organising?\n\nThe exhibition approaches the mi
litant image as a historical category\, which has\nalways depended upon pa
rticular forms of mediation. Earlier traditions of\nmilitant image-making
were sustained by formations capable of producing and\ncirculating images
in the name of a collective political subject. Their\nambitions were insep
arable from the infrastructures through which they moved and\nthe revoluti
onary horizons they sought to cultivate.\n\nContemporary uprisings unfold
under markedly different terms. Images now\ncirculate across encrypted mes
saging applications\, social media feeds and\ninformal digital networks wh
ose logics reshape our visibility and attention.\nOften produced by those
embedded within the events themselves\, they move rapidly\nbetween testimo
ny\, tactical communication and affective expression. Their\naesthetic for
m bears the imprint of the political moment from which they emerge:\nanony
mity\, spontaneity and opacity become qualities inscribed within the image
s.\n\nRather than asking whether the militant image survives in the presen
t\, Life\nAfter Love asks how its political function has been transformed\
, and what this\ntransformation discloses about the actuality of struggle.
The works assembled\nhere reflect upon the conditions through which image
s are produced\, circulated\,\nappropriated and contested. Many emerge fro
m practices situated alongside\npolitical organising\, mutual aid and comm
unity work\, where cultural production\nunfolds in close proximity to live
d struggle and the imperative of\ninternationalist solidarity. Taken toget
her\, they invite viewers to consider the\nmilitant image in the present t
ense and the forms through which emancipatory\nfutures become thinkable.\n
