use at the Metabolic Lab is a place where different water-saving\nmethods
of food cultivation are being tested\, both in soil and directly in\nwater
. The aim is to save water\, grow healthy organic food and keep production
\ncosts low. The systems are therefore built as much as possible using sim
ple\,\neasily sourced materials\, so that others can build them themselves
as well.\n\nOne of the systems in the greenhouse is aquaponics\, in which
fish and plants\nwork together. The nitrogen-rich waste produced by the f
ish is converted into\nnutrients for the plants. The plants\, in turn\, cl
ean the water\, which then flows\nback to the fish. This creates a natural
cycle.\n\nThe greenhouse also experiments with a range of other cultivati
on methods\, all\nfocused on organic and sustainable food production in ur
ban areas.\n\nGrower Andrei Becca has eight years of experience growing pl
ants\, including two\nyears working in one of the most advanced greenhouse
s in the Netherlands. He is\ncurrently also pursuing a master’s degree at
	Wageningen University\, focusing on\nwater conservation and management.\n\
