DTSTART:20260515T180000Z
DESCRIPTION:This screening is part of a series of films presented for the e
xhibition Not My\nSoul by the Allard Pierson Museum and the National Slave
ry Museum.\n\nIntroduction by: Koen Vacano\n\nIn this classic film\, Kirk
Douglas plays the enslaved Spartacus\, who in 76 BC is\nsold to a gladiato
	r school and\, after gruelling training\, rebels against his\noppressors.
With the support of Jean Simmons as Virinia\, his resistance grows\ninto a
large-scale slave uprising.\n\nPrior to the screening\, Koen Vacano will
give an introduction. His introduction\ninvites a critical examination of
the way in which Hollywood has portrayed\nslavery in antiquity\, and quest
ions the notion that it differs fundamentally\nfrom later forms of slavery
.\n\nKoen Vacano researches how and why antiquity matters in the present d
ay. By\ncombining insights from reception studies\, cultural history and m
edia studies\,\nhe seeks to understand how stories\, ideas and art have be
en transmitted and\ntransformed from antiquity to today’s popular culture\
, and conversely\, how\nantiquity has been reconstructed time and again in
	 later periods (including the\npresent).\n\n * Language: English\n * Durat
