DTSTAMP:20260609T220408Z
DTSTART:20260904T173000Z
DESCRIPTION:Mohammad Rasoulof is considered one of the most important moder
n-day Iranian\nfilmmakers. In his films\, he exposes the inner workings of
the Iranian regime\nand shows how political oppression and corruption sha
pe the everyday lives of\nIranians.\n\nRasoulof’s films themselves have al
so been marked by repression. During this\nedition of The State of the Wor
ld\, Rasoulof uses excerpts from his own body of\nwork to demonstrate how
political repression not only determines what an artist\ncan speak about\,
but also influences form\, imagination\, and artistic choices.\nOver more
than twenty years of working under censorship\, his cinematic language\nh
as evolved from allegorical and indirect to more direct\, sharp\, and\ncon
frontational.\n\nMohammad Rasoulof’s work has received widespread internat
ional acclaim. He won\nthe Golden Bear for There Is No Evil (2020) and the
Special Jury Prize at the\nCannes Film Festival for The Seed of the Sacre
d Fig. That film directly engages\nwith the protests and repression that f
ollowed the death of Mahsa Amini.\n\nShortly before the film’s premiere\,
Rasoulof fled Iran after once again being\nsentenced to imprisonment becau
se of his work and his criticism of the regime.\n\nTicketsale via Nederlan
ds Theater Festival\, the event will be held in De Balie’s\nGrote Zaal.
