SUMMARY:Microaggression in Digital World
DTSTAMP:20260602T204507Z
DTSTART:20260629T173000Z
DESCRIPTION:Exploring inclusive/exclusionary design choices in digital inte
rfaces.\n\nMicroaggression in design refers to subtle issues occurring eve
ryday while\nintarcting with physical or digital interfaces\, creating ext
ra barriers\nespecially for minorities and marginalised groups. Depending
on factors such as\ngender\, language\, or race\, people might have to spe
nd more effort and face more\nchallenges on digital spaces. For instance\,
while filling out an online form\,\nwomen or people of other gender ident
ities may have to scroll down the list\nwhere ‘male’ is set as the default
\, if their gender is included at all. The\ndesign choices behind these ex
clusionary interfaces are not necessarily\nintentional\, but they often co
me from the default system (of thinking)\,\nunconsciously influencing desi
gners. This design flaw can create\, maintain or\nintensify harm\, exclusi
on and social inequality. In this programme we aim to\nexplore how more th
oughtful digital experience design choices can not only\nsupport current u
sers\, but also create a path for future designers to design\nmore inclusi
ve and accessible systems. We will also examine how policy has (or\nhas no
	t) prevented severe consequences of the current design practices in the\nd
igital world\, and how it should be improved to address these challenges m
ore\neffectively.\n\nIn conversation with Lisanne Buik Founder Gracious AI
