So, what is going on here?

While the vast majority of UFO reports can be explained in conventional te rms, a persistent remainder consists of observations that are difficult to reconcile with straightforward explanations. It is precisely this categor y that has kept military and intelligence communities worldwide engaged fo r more than seventy years.

Whether these observations point to natur al phenomena, unknown advanced technology, or something else entirely, the y deserve rigorous scientific study: skeptical but open-minded.

Alexander Bartels (1993) is a historian with a lifelong fasci nation for UFO phenomena, about which he has written for NRC Handelsblad.
