DESCRIPTION:LECTURE: THE UFO PHENOMENON\n\nOn July 16\, as part of our We A
re Not Alone season\, historian Alexander Bartels\nwill guide audiences th
rough the enigmatic modern history of UFOs\, from their\nrise to mainstrea
m attention in the twentieth century to the present day\,\nhighlighting ex
traordinary cases and bringing us up to date on current\ndevelopments.\n\n
“Behind the scenes\, high-ranking Air Force officers are soberly concerned
about\nthe UFOs. But through official secrecy and ridicule\, many citizen
s are led to\nbelieve the unknown flying objects are nonsense. To hide the
facts\, the Air\nForce has silenced its personnel.”\n\nThis was written t
o Congress in 1960 by the first director of the CIA\, Roscoe H.\nHillenkoe
tter. Statements like this do not stand alone. From generals to former\npr
esidents like Obama and from intelligence people all over the world to fig
hter\npilots: there seems to be an unexplained phenomenon that is taken se
riously by\npeople who know how to look at the sky – and beneath the ocean
surface...\n\nSo\, what is going on here?\n\nWhile the vast majority of U
FO reports can be explained in conventional terms\, a\npersistent remainde
r consists of observations that are difficult to reconcile\nwith straightf
orward explanations. It is precisely this category that has kept\nmilitary
and intelligence communities worldwide engaged for more than seventy\nyea
rs.\n\nWhether these observations point to natural phenomena\, unknown adv
anced\ntechnology\, or something else entirely\, they deserve rigorous sci
	entific study:\nskeptical but open-minded.\n\nAlexander Bartels (1993) is
a historian with a lifelong fascination for UFO\nphenomena\, about which h
e has written for NRC Handelsblad. He is part of the\ncollective Wanderwel
le\, whose music is released through Important Records and\npresented at v
enues such as EYE\, Paradiso\, and Carré. Their debut film was\nselected f
or a Gouden Kalf\, and they are currently in an ongoing collaboration\nwit
h photographic artist Roger Ballen.\n\nPlease note that this lecture will
be presented in Dutch. Tickets for the We Are\nNot Alone [https://www.lab1
	11.nl/ufo/] program are sold separately.
