DTSTAMP:20261102T024223Z
DTSTART:20261128T100000Z
DESCRIPTION:Children’s club of the Klazien-o-theek\, hosted by Klazina\, th
	e housing officer\,\nduring Searching for the Underground\, Kate Moore’s i
nstallation at De\nPoorthuisjes.\n\n\nSEARCHING FOR THE UNDERGROUND\n\nSea
rching for the Underground is a multidisciplinary installation by composer
\nKate Moore at De Poorthuisjes in Amsterdam. Developed during her residen
cy with\nOde aan de gemeenschap\, the work explores the sounds of the gard
en at the Van\nder Pek housing block and the hidden world beneath it.\n\nD
uring her residency with Ode aan de gemeenschap\, Moore has turned her att
ention\nto the semi-enclosed garden of the Van der Pek housing block. Usin
g audio\nequipment\, she explores the hidden world beneath the surface of
this urban\noasis. Through this artistic research\, Moore becomes part of
the everyday life\nof the Van der Pek block by listening to the sounds tha
t converge in the garden\nfrom the surrounding apartments. As the resident
s themselves do not have access\nto the garden\, she occupies a unique pos
ition since she can experience a form of\ncollectivity that remains hidden
from others. This preliminary research will\nlead to Moore’s next project
\, The Underground: An Unseen Opera\, which will be\npresented at the Oran
jewoud Festival\, a contemporary music festival in\nFriesland\, in May 202
7.\n\n\nKATE MOORE\n\nKate Moore is an internationally acclaimed Australia
n-Dutch composer whose work\nexplores the physical qualities of sound and
its relationship to space\, time and\nperception. Her compositions often d
evelop through repetition and gradual\ntransformation\, drawing attention
to subtle changes in texture\, rhythm and\nresonance. Alongside composing
for musicians and ensembles\, Moore creates sound\ninstallations and site-
sensitive works that respond to their surroundings.\n\nBorn in Oxfordshire
(England) in 1979 and raised in Australia\, she has lived and\nworked in
the Netherlands since 2002. Her compositions balance between\ncontemporary
classical music and experimental sound art. She often seeks\ninnovative s
ounds by combining traditional instruments with unconventional\nobjects ma
de of metal or ceramic. She founded her own ensemble\, the Herz\nEnsemble.
Her works are also performed worldwide by leading ensembles and\norchestr
as such as Asko|Schönberg\, HIIT/Slagwerk Den Haag\, the Netherlands Radio
\nPhilharmonic Orchestra\, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra\, the Groot Omroe
pkoor\n(Netherlands Radio Choir)\, and the Netherlands Chamber Choir. Her
compositions\nhave been presented at venues and events including the Holla
nd Festival\,\nMuziekgebouw\, TivoliVredenburg\, and the Sydney Opera Hous
	e. In 2017\, she\nreceived the prestigious Dutch Matthijs Vermeulen Prize
for composition\,\nfollowed by the Gieskes-Strijbis Podiumprijs in 2022.\n
\n\nODE AAN DE GEMEENSCHAP\n\nOde aan de gemeenschap is a year-long progra
mme at De Poorthuisjes that brings\nprofessional artists and local residen
ts together. Through four artist\nresidencies\, the programme explores the
contemporary meaning of community and\nthe ways in which people connect\,
share knowledge and create together. The\nartists-in-residence are Robert
a Maimone (Spring 2026)\, Arie Syarifuddin (Summer\n2026)\, Kate Moore (Au
	tumn 2026)\, and artist duo Mangano & Van Rooy (Winter\n2027). Klazina\, t
he housing officer\, guides the projects and hosts the\nKlazien-o-theek.\n
\nDe Poorthuisjes are two former gatehouses of the Van der Pek housing blo
ck.\nBuilt in 1912\, the buildings are now used for art and community proj
ects in\nAmsterdam Oost. De Poorthuisjes are operated by Stichting LOLA.\n
