DESCRIPTION:Running your own communications infrastructure has obvious bene
fits.  We live in\na world of increasing digital censorship\, and are rare
ly completely in charge of\nour communications.  Even if we choose to use
"better" alternatives to WhatsApp\,\nInstagram\, etc.\, we are still alway
s completely reliant on the one underlying\nnetwork\, i.e. "The Internet".
With the push of a button\, "The Internet" may all\nof a sudden become u
navailable.  In places with oppressive regimes\, this has not\nbeen uncomm
on.  In the current political climate\, it would not be surprising if\nany
political system all of a sudden became repressive.\n\nIn this workshop\,
we will explore the possibilities for setting up a\ndecentralized off gri
d communications system using the Reticulum communication\nprotocol stack.
We choose to focus on Reticulum because it is designed for\nheterogeneou
s networks built from various cheap devices\, to be deployed in a\nbottom
up way by small communities.  More information is found here:\nhttps://ret
	iculum.community/ [https://reticulum.community/]\n\nThe mesh network stack
runs on various platforms.  You can run it on your\ndesktop\, your home s
erver\, your mobile phone.  In the workshop\, we will focus on\nusing Reti
culum on three scales: (1) as a Bluetooth network for mobile phones\nmessa
ging in small groups\; (2) building some standalone nodes that you we can\
ndeploy around a city to build out an autonomous communication infrastruct
ure\;\n(3) and we will also look into connecting cities with more long-ran
	ge radio\nlinks.\n
