DESCRIPTION:FILM LECTURE: MY FILM IS VIETNAM\n\n\nHOW APOCALYPSE NOW SHAPED
OUR UNDERSTANDING OF WAR\n\nOn May 12th\, join us for a special lecture o
n Apocalypse Now\, as Rutger van der\nHoeven explores how the film shaped
our understanding of war\, at a moment when\nthe current conflict with Ira
n once again echoes the long shadow of America’s\ninvolvement in Vietnam.\
n\nApocalypse Now is regarded by many as one of the most iconic war movies
of all\ntime. Yet the influence of Coppola’s masterpiece extends far beyo
nd movie\nhistory. It is a product of a specific phase in America’s cultur
al and political\nstruggle over the memory of the Vietnam War. While US co
nsensus has settled on a\ndifferent reading\, Apocalypse Now has become th
e most important reference point\nfor what war ‘really’ is – in American s
	ociety\, to a globalized audience\, and\neven in the US military itself.\n
\nOver de spreker\n\nRutger van der Hoeven is a cultural historian at Utre
cht University and a\nforeign editor at De Groene Amsterdammer. He has lec
tured on the Vietnam War for\nmany tours of duty.\n\nPlease note that this
lecture will be presented in English. Tickets for the\nscreening of Apoca
lypse Now at 20:30 are sold separately.
