DESCRIPTION:FIGHT THE POWER:\n\n\nCHAINED FOR LIFE (2018)\n\n\nINCL. PANEL
TALK\n\nFor this edition of Fight the Power\, we are screening Aaron Schim
berg’s Chained\nfor Life (2018)\, a darkly comic film about representation
\, authorship and who\ngets to shape the stories cinema tells about us. Fr
om the characters we see on\nscreen to the people behind the camera\, repr
esentation is as much about who gets\nto tell a story as who gets to be pa
rt of it.\n\nIn Chained for Life\, Hollywood actress Mabel takes the lead
role in a horror\nfilm directed by an eccentric European auteur and starri
ng actors with physical\ndifferences. She plays a blind woman opposite Ros
enthal\, a comedian with a\nfacial difference\, and as their relationship
develops both on and off screen\,\nthe boundaries between the film being m
ade and the world around it begin to\nblur. With surreal humour and an unc
onventional approach to filmmaking\,\nSchimberg explores how cinema shapes
our ideas of beauty\, normality and\nidentity\, while making room for the
people so often reduced to supporting roles\nin someone else’s story.\n\n
Following the screening\, we bring together museologist and disabled humou
rist\nSem I. Bannenberg and screenwriter and director Sam Dijkstra to disc
uss who gets\nto shape the stories told about disability\, both on screen
and beyond it.\nDrawing on their work in art and film\, the conversation e
xplores how familiar\nportrayals can be challenged\, how people can move f
rom being the subjects of\nother people’s stories to becoming the storytel
lers themselves\, and what it\ntakes to gain greater control over your own
	 representation.\n\nAbout the speakers\n\nSem I. Bannenberg (he/him) is a
museologist and art historian. Bannenberg has\npresented research on the E
mbodiment Model of Disability and its representation\nin Contemporary (Dis
ability) Art. Additionally he works as a disabled humourist\,\nand in his
artistic practice he focuses on disability and social stigma.\nAdditionall
y he is a general board member of the NGO for dutch disabled history\nKreu
kelcollectief\n\nSam Dijkstra (he/him) is a screenwriter and director. His
debut short Sea Legs\nplayed at the Reelabilities Film Festival in New Yo
rk\, one of the most\ninfluential film festivals regarding disability. His

Dutch cinemas from the 14th of\njanuary after a critically acclaimed world
premiere at the 79th Edinburgh\nInternational Film Festival.
