DTSTAMP:20260420T180750Z
DTSTART:20260520T180000Z
DESCRIPTION:The third Evelien Gans Lecture will be given by French-Israeli
sociologist Eva\nIllouz. Afterwards\, she will engage in a conversation wi
th Arnon Grunberg.\n\nAn outspoken critic of Israeli policies who at the s
ame time questions\nprevailing views on colonialism and Zionism within the
academic left\, Illouz\noften finds herself at odds with different sides
of the debate. In her lecture\,\nIllouz will reflect on the public debate
that was set in motion after the\nOctober 7 attacks in Israel. She has bee
n critical of strands within Western\nacademic debate\, that in her view i
	nsufficiently acknowledge the experiences of\nIsraeli victims.\n\nIn 2025\
, Illouz was at the centre of a controversy when Erasmus University\nwithd
rew its invitation at Illouz to speak at the university. Erasmus Universit
y\nlater apologised for this. Earlier\, Illouz was denied the Israel Prize
\, the most\nimportant cultural prize in Israel\, by the Israeli governmen
t because of her\ncriticism of the IDF.\n\nIllouz’ work focuses on how mod
ern culture shapes our emotions\, relationships\,\nand ideas about love. I
n her most recent work\, Explosive Modernity\, she argues\nthat the defini
ng crises of our time can only be understood through the powerful\nemotion
	s that drive them: fear\, disappointment\, rage\, shame\, and love. She ha
s\napplied this perspective to several societies\, including Israel\, anal
yzing how\nthe current government mobilizes emotions to deepen social divi
	sions and\nundermine democratic norms.\n\nAbout Eva Illouz\nEva Illouz (19
	61) is a professor of sociology at the University of Jerusalem.\nShe resea
rches love\, emotions\, and modern culture. Her earlier book Why Love\nEnd
s has been published in Dutch. Her latest book Explosive Modernity has bee
	n\nreleased in 2025.\n\nAbout the Evelien Gans Lecture\n\nEvelien Gans (19
	51 – 2018) was a committed scholar\, a critical and combative\nhistorian\,
and a chronicler of Jewish life. In addition to her work as a\nresearcher
at the NIOD (Netherlands Institute for War Documentation)\, she was a\npr
ofessor of Contemporary Judaism. In 2018\, she said in an interview with V
	rij\nNederland: “I am not only Jewish\, but also a woman\, left-wing\, and
a historian.”\nHer sister Heleen Gans\, friend Judith Bruinsma\, and coll
eague Dienke Hondius are\nthe initiators of the Evelien Gans Lecture to ho
nor her legacy. They organize\nthe lecture together with De Balie\, De Gro
ene Amsterdammer\, Jewish Cultural\nQuarter\, and the Menasseh ben Israel
	Institute.
