	\n\nPRETTY VILLAGE\, PRETTY FLAME 1996\n(Lepa Sela Lepo Gore)\n\nDirected
by Srdjan Dragojevic\n129 minutes\n\nThis flick starts off in a country th
at no longer exists\, called Yugoslavia\,\nwhen it was under the reign of
a guy named Tito. When Tito died\, everything in\nthe country began unrave
ling fast\, and the economy started to plummet. This\nstory zooms in on tw
o young boys who are friends and follows their relationship\nfor the next
years\, eventually leading them to different sides of the Bosnian\nwar tha
t broke out in the early 1990s. By the time this movie was made\,\nYugosla
via had officially perished.\n\nThis flick throws us into the thick of it\
, and is absolutely riveting\, with\ngreat performances by all the lead ac
tors as it juggles the politics of a\nchaotic time in history. It was a ti
me when the closest friends or even families\nwere broken apart and killin
g each other. This movie depicts such a tragedy\, but\nit is also full of
humor\, wit and insights. The mechanics of the film are\nrazor-sharp\, fro
m the cinematography to the dialogue to the direction. It is one\nof the m
ost praised movies dealing with the topic of the war in Yugoslavia\, and\n
it shows all the absurdity\, irony\, ridiculousness and hypocrisy of any w
ar\nsituation.\n\nIt was directed by the young Yugoslavian whippersnapper
Srdjan Dragojevic (We\nare Not Angels) who really blooms as a director her
e... a film that takes place\nin a hospital room full of severely wounded
and dying soldiers\, with most of the\nstory told through flashbacks and m
emories.\n\nThe movie is also great in how it shows how the madness escala
	tes... starting\noff with something small\, but then—step by step—escalate
s into a furious war\nsituation where the most unbelievable atrocities bec
ome normal. Do you think\nyou’re immune to this kind of narrow-mindedness?
I see it all around me every\nday. This war mentality is in the air. And
now Europe is building up a huge\nmilitary infrastructure—the same NATO th
at loves to rush into troubled areas and\nalways thinks bombing is the bes
	t solution\, just like what happened to\nYugoslavia.\n\nSYMBIOPSYCHOTAXICI
NEMA\n\nA series of socially engaged movies\, screened once a month on Thu
rsdays.\nTouching on such hot topics as immigration\, homelessness\, racis
m\, education\,\nradical gender propositions\, the pandemic and gentrifica
tion\, these films not\nonly explore visionary politics\, but are also cho
sen to stir our imagination and\ncreativity. The essence of cinema is the
collective experience\, and these\nscreenings are aimed at creating intima
te communities again in an increasingly\nhectic and fragmented world.
