	 | “LEVE CODEINE\, LEVE DE TRAAGHEID”\n\nTickets on sale on Friday\, Octob
	er 23rd\, 10h.\n\nAfter a brief European tour in 2023 (including sold-out
shows in London and\nParis)\, and more recent performances in South Americ
a and Japan\, 90’s band\nCodeine returns to play a dozen shows in support
of their lost album Dessau\,\nrecorded in 1992 but recently(ish) released
by the archival label Numero Group\,\nalong with remastered vinyl of their
original Sub Pop/Glitterhouse records.\n\nWith the release of Frigid Star

come known as “slowcore.” Predating influential\nalbums by kindred spirits
Low and Duster by half a decade\, Codeine’s slow\,\ngraceful songs suppor
t lyrics that are a disturbingly gentle embodiment of\ndepression and disa

	[https://youtu.be/Grubv86suXc]\n\nABOUT DESSAU\nRecorded June 1992 at Haro
ld Dessau Recording studio in New York City with\nfounding drummer/guitari
st Chris Brokaw\, Dessau consists of alternate versions\nof songs later re
-recorded for their Barely Real EP and The White Birch\, the\nlatter with
drummer Doug Scharin (Rex/June of 44). Numero Group resurrected the\nDessa
u recordings\, now released with the original planned artwork: a turbulent
\nblue-green painting by American tonalist Thomas Wilmer Dewing.\n\n“Dessa
	u arguably stands as the best of Codeine’s three albums\, a perfect\nsnaps
hot of the existential anxiety that can arrive in one’s late 20s\, when\na
dolescence fades far into the rearview\, but the future is closing in fast
	.”\n–Grayson Haver Currin/Bandcamp\n\nPERSONAL QUOTE\n“I was very reluctan
t to play again\, afraid to breathe life into these songs\nagain. But talk
ing to people who hadn’t seen the band back then and to whom the\nmusic me
ans a lot has absolutely changed my mind\, not just about playing but\nals
o about what music is actually for. And we’ve been honored by the response
to\nour shows\, with even people singing along! So I want to bring that n
ew focus and\nunderstanding to these shows now.”\n–Stephen Immerwahr\n\n“L
isten to Stephen Immerwahr’s dour poetry\, John Engle’s tolling guitars\,
and\nChris Brokaw’s glacial drumming\, and picture falling snow. The sound
	\, which\ntypified the slowcore indie-rock sub-genre\, is so chilling\, pr
	ecise\, and\nbeguilingly extreme — shy\, then crashing — that it recalibra
tes the vast spaces\naround each inquisitive note. It becomes an explorati
on of tone and tension\, and\na desolate meditation.” – The New Yorker USA
Leve Codeine\
, leve de traagheid.”\n– Dansende Beren BEL 2023\n\n“Codeine has some ante
cedents\, from Pink Floyd and Neil Young — Mr. Immerwahr\nshares his high-
tenor register — to the arty post-punk of bands like MX-80\, but\nit forge
d its own sound. Its songs start out quiet and sparse\, only to gather\nvo
lume and gravity\, crashing and tolling\, yet somehow staying austere\, ev
en\ndiffident. They crest and then fall away\, often with a lingering inst
rumental\ncoda\, ending up no more fulfilled than they were as they began.
The music was\ngrunge’s withdrawn\, desolate cousin. The era’s preferred
suffix was “-core\,” so\nCodeine was tagged “slowcore” and “sadcore\,” min
i-genres that would be continued\nby bands like Low and Red House Painters
after Codeine disbanded.”\n– New York Times USA 2012\n\n“Codeine’s delibe
rate pace suited songs freighted with Immerwahr’s angst. “My\nemotional st
ate\, my disassociation from others\, was the core of it\,” he admits.\nBu
t this music was emotional without the histrionics of grunge. “It was a\nr
eaction to that Eddie Vedder style of singing. What suited these songs\, m
	y own\nlived experience\, was something smaller\, something anti-epic.” Po
ssessed of a\nsimmering power\, their 1990 debut album Frigid Stars LP was
championed in the UK\nby John Peel.”\n– The Guardian UK 2023\n\nPresale/d
oor prices adjusted: our events are set up by volunteers in favour of\nsup
porting DIY touring acts\, but it is getting ever more risky to plan and b
