DESCRIPTION:Drijfand tells the story of the foating gardens created by the
renowned artist\nRobert Jasper Grootveld in Amsterdam’s Entrepot harbor\,
Zeeburg district.\nBeginning in late 1999\, I started to flm the construct
ion of these unique garden\nislands in Grootveld’s workshop\, a visionary
project he had nurtured since the\n1960s. Within a few months two foating
garden were completed. Through intimate\nfootage\, we witness the creative
process unfold\, as well as the sudden collapse\nof the project. amid esc
alating tensions between Grootveld and local\nauthorities. Until his passi
ng in 2009\, I flmed regularly. Among the moments\ncaptured were times whe
n he was recognized for his role in bringing global\nattention to Amsterda
m\, as well as his involvement as one of the founders of the\nProvo moveme
nt in the 1960s. In 2024\, drawn by the gardens’ abundant nature and\nthe
dedication of the Raft Builders of Amsterdam\, who maintain the islands in
\nGrootveld’s pioneering spirit\, I returned to document this living legac
	y. The\nislands’ buoyancy relies on styrofoam\, a material Grootveld champ
	ioned for its\n“power of softness.” Yet\, 25 years later\, styrofoam’s env
ironmental impact has\nsparked urgent questions. The flm delves into this
dilemma\, tracing the search\nfor sustainable\, biobased alternatives that
honor Grootveld’s ethos while\nprotecting nature. Drijfand offers a candi
	d\, tender\, and often hilarious glimpse\ninto Amsterdam’s underground cre
ative forces\, a story of resilience\, innovation\,\nand the evolving rela
tionship between art\, nature\, and community. Duration 64\nminutes\, engl
	ish subtitled.
