SUMMARY:Cinema Mythologica: Vertigo (1958)
DTSTAMP:20261031T212334Z
DTSTART:20261118T193000Z
DESCRIPTION:Love robots\, doppelgängers and tragic heroes: behind these ico
nic film\ncharacters lies a mythical past. Although most films are set in
the present or\nthe future\, classical myths play a significant role throu
ghout Hollywood.\nCountless films are inspired by archetypal narrative pat
terns and mythical\ncharacters\, particularly when they deal with contempo
rary themes such as AI\,\ngender and psychology. In the Cinema Mythologica
	 series\, a collaboration between\nDe Uitkijk and classicist Koen Vacano\,
we uncover the hidden mythical layers of\nfilm history\, from Oedipus com
plexes to narcissistic algorithms. Each film\nfeatures a short introductio
n in English\, inviting you to view the film through\na mythological lens.
\n\nDetective ‘Scotty’ Ferguson finds himself with nothing to do after bei
ng\nsuspended by the San Francisco Police Department due to an extreme fea
r of\nheights. With time on his hands\, he comes to the aid of an old frie
nd. His\nfriend’s wife\, Madeleine\, is behaving strangely\, so Scotty is
assigned to shadow\nher. It soon becomes clear that the suspended detectiv
e has fallen obsessively\nin love with the blonde woman he is shadowing.\n
\nIn Vertigo\, Hitchcock plays an ingenious game with illusion and reality
	\; is what\nthe viewer sees a reflection of Scotty’s perceptions\, or are
they mere figments\nof his imagination? The now widely used\, dizzying cam
era effect\, in which the\ncamera moves backwards whilst zooming in at the
	 same time\, takes its name from\nthis film: the ‘Vertigo Effect’.\n\n * L
	anguage: English\n * Subtitles: English\n * Duration: 150 mins.\n * Direct
or: Alfred Hitchcock\n * Cast: James Stewart\, Kim Novak\, Barbara Bel Ged
