DESCRIPTION:Genre: Cinema\, Drama\, French\nLine up: Alain Delon\, Jeanne M
	oreau\, Francine Bergé\nOpen: 19:30 - 22:00 hrs\nTickets: € 3\n\nMR. KLEIN
	 1976\n(Monsieur Klein)\nDirected by Joseph Losey\n135 minutes\nIn French
with English subtitles\nWhat a haunting movie this is... a riveting thrill
er made by director Joseph\nLosey\, containing a delirious performance by
Alain Delon. In my eyes\, it's the\nbest role of his career. And yet it is
a film that was pushed away and largely\ndeleted in cinema history. This
is pretty shocking in terms of culture\,\nespecially since there is so muc
h junk kept in the history books\, while gems\nlike this are forgotten.\nR
ight from the start\, this flick is absolutely riveting. The story takes p
lace\nduring the German occupation of France in 1942\, and centers on an a
rt dealer\ncalled Robert Klein (Delon). Since Jews are being rounded up an
d sent to the\ndeath camps\, it meant Jewish homes would be ransacked by t
he locals after Jews\nwere deported (the same thing happened on a widespre
ad scale here in Amsterdam).\nSince our main character Robert is an art de
aler\, it means he can get stolen art\nfor bargain prices. And of course t
here are other Jews who haven't been dragged\nto the camps\, but are being
hunted down and need cash to escape\, and desperate\nenough to sell every
thing they have. All in all\, the Jewish persecution is great\nfor Robert'
s business\, until mysterious events begin to occur and Robert becomes\naw
are there is another man going around Paris\, using his name\, but who is
a Jew.\nThe movie then unravels from this otherworldly premise...\nThis ex
istential thriller has a strong Kafka vibe\, and director Joseph Losey\nce
rtainly knew what it was like to be hunted. He had been accused of being a
\nCommunist during the 'red scare' of the 1950s in the United States\, was
forced\nto go underground\, and eventually escaped to Europe where he mad
e some dazzling\nworks of art like The Servant\, and this film. The cinema
tography is overcast in\na poetic way\, flowing with muted colors and deep
shadows. It unfolds almost like\na lucid dream\, as we watch our main cha
racter's life fall apart\, while at the\nsame time exploring themes like p
	ersecution\, mysterious doppelgängers\, the dark\nside of collaboration\,
	and war-profiteering. And let's be clear\; this is not\njust a movie about
something in the past\, it is about our modern lives today\nalso. The scr
ipt is by Franco Solinas (Battle of Algiers). Besides Alain Delon\,\nthe f
ilm features Jeanne Moreau and Juliet Berto.\nOne of the great aspects of
this movie is how it fuses together delirium with\nhistorical facts... a s
urreal\, psychological masterpiece. At the time it came\nout\, it won the
César Awards for Best Film and Best Director.\n\nOvertoom 301 2nd floor\nD
oors open at 19:30\, film starts at 20:00\n3 euros
