	:30 - 23:00 hrs€ 3\n\nLAND AND FREEDOM 1995\n\nDirected by Ken Loach\n\n10
	9 minutes\n\nIn English\, Spanish\, Catalan\, with English subtitles\n\nBr
itish director Ken Loach created his own special kind of cinema right from
the\nbeginning of his career\, based on his support of the underdog. From
his first\nfeature about a single unwed mother dealing with the prejudice
s of society\, to\nhis next film about a young boy living in a small town
who is bullied\, to his\nlater support for the miners who are being attack
ed by the British police in the\n80s\, he was always on the side of those
who questioned power.\n\nMany consider this movie to be one of his key wor
ks\, and it focuses on the\nSpanish Civil War of the 1930s - the fight aga
inst the fascist dictatorship that\nis overtaking the country. It follows
the journey of David Carr\, a guy from\nLiverpool who travels to Spain and
throws himself into the conflict. The film\nshows that not only is there
a war going on\, but also a battle of ideas..\ntherefore amid the scenes o
f war\, what the film is really about is an attempt to\nexplore the so-cal
led utopian ideas of collectivism and democracy. As a\ncommunist David Car
r enters the war seeing it in black-and-white\, but soon finds\nthings are
not so easy and clear-cut. The story and the issues involved seem to\nbe
largely shaped by writer George Orwell and what he had witnessed when he w
as\nin that war.\n\nThe film works equally as a drama of war as it does a
brilliant discussion of\nideas. It is\, of course\, also a poignant histor
y lesson. But of course here\nphilosophies are discussed not in safe acade
mic classrooms\, but in the midst of\nlife and death\, tragedy and violenc
	e. I would even venture to say that perhaps\nuniversities are the last pla
ce for philosophy... instead\, ideas should be\nconjured up in the streets
	\, connected to real-life situations\, where ideas can\nbreathe. It's a fi
lm that is absolutely riveting on so many different levels.\n\nThe movie f
orged from beaten steel - the clash of drama\, emotions and ideas\n\nDoors
open at 19:30\nFilm starts at 20:00
