HU\, THE LITTLE STRANGER 1989\n(Bashu\, gharibeye koochak\, باشو غریبه کوچ
	ک)\nDirected by Bahram Beyzai\n121 minutes\nPersian and Arabic\, with Engl
ish subtitles\nHere is a movie from Iran which helps give us deeper insigh
ts than all the\nstatistics and the headlines we receive\, which are alway
s\, in the end\, abstract.\nCrafted by Iranian director Bahram Beyzai (Str
anger and the Fog) who conjured up\nhis own style of cinema\, weaving toge
ther illuminating imagery and music. His\nfilms are dramas\, but often hav
e a surreal edge to them\, as if we're entering\nterritory we are unfamili
ar with. His movies are often also about strangers\, the\npeople on the ed
ge of society.\nThis flick focuses on Bashu\, a child from an Arabic commu
nity within Iran. At\nthe very beginning of the movie young Bashu witnesse
s the Iraq bombing of his\nhome and death of his entire family during the
Iran-Iraq War. With all ties\nbroken\, he runs into the landscape towards
the northern part of Iran. The main\nstory kicks in when a woman finds him
and tries to care for Bashu who is almost\nlike a wild animal afraid of h
uman contact. The film is about her coaxing him\nin\, even though they can
't speak the same language along with the fact that\nBashu is psychologica
lly damaged.\nThere are so many themes touched upon in this journey. First
and foremost it's\nabout the victims of war of course\, which is especial
ly pertinent to what's\nhappening today. Also\, director Bahram Beyzai oft
en places strong independent\nwomen at the centre of his films\, marginali
sed figures who go against the grain\,\nfollow their own instincts instead
of traditional customs\, and pursue their own\nvision. In this tale\, act
ress Susan Taslimi portrays the resilient woman who\nrefuses to obey the c
lass and race divisions within her community and it's her\nperformance tha
t lies at the heart of the film and makes it radiate.\nAs one viewer said:
	 "او، مثل همه‌ى بچه‌ها، فرزند آفتاب و زمين است."
