DESCRIPTION:Interactive Lecture: Power\, the Manosphere\, and the Distance
Between Us and the\n‘Other’\nby Naomi Kloosterboer\n\nGuns\, cars\, and mo
torcycles are symbols of what the world currently seems to\nrevolve around
	: status\, the power of the strongest\, authoritarian leaders\, and a\nrev
ived ideal of masculinity in which men are expected to be in complete\ncon
trol—of everything\, including women and reproduction. They are not symbol
	s of\ncompassion\, solidarity\, equality\, or human rights.\n\nOne of the
questions raised by Julika Rudelius’ work is: to what extent do these\nsym
bols of power and status belong only to the ‘Other’\, and to what extent d
o\nthey belong to us as well? The ‘Other’ may be a stranger\, but it may a
lso be a\nfamily member\, friend\, or loved one who is involved in the man
osphere\, attracted\nto these symbols\, committed to strict norms of mascu
linity\, or who in other ways\nassociates human worth with particular obje
	cts\, strength\, and perfection.\n\nIn this interactive lecture\, we will
explore the distance between ourselves and\nthis ‘Other’\, and what it tak
es to bridge that divide. Can we understand the\nother person? Do we under
stand ourselves well enough? And is seeking\nunderstanding even the right
thing to do?\n\nThis event will be held in Dutch.
