DESCRIPTION:How can digital technology support craftsmanship without removi
ng the maker from\nthe process? As part of this lecture\, Aslı Aydın Aksan
explores the role of\ndigital technology within craft\, including her exp
erience developing the\nHapticolor machine\, an innovative color printer f
	or fabric.\n\nThrough experiments with textile printing\, natural dyes\, a
nd interactive machine\ncontrol\, the project investigates how digital too
ls\, haptic systems\, and\nopen-source machine protocols can contribute to
	 accessibility\, interaction\,\nimmediacy\, and scalability\, while keepin
	g the intuition\, autonomy\, and\nintervention of the craft maker at the c
enter.\n\n\nABOUT THE PRESENTER\n\nAslı Aydın Aksan is an architect\, rese
archer\, and lecturer at Waag Futurelab.\nHer work explores the intersecti
ons of computational design\, digital\nfabrication\, craft\, and design ed
ucation through critical making and\nexperimentation. Waag Futurelab is a
research institute on technology and\nsociety working toward an open\, fai
r\, and inclusive future. The TextileLab\n[https://waag.org/en/lab/textile
lab/] explores sustainable and regenerative\npractices for the textile and
clothing industry at the intersection of craft\,\nbiology\, and emerging
	technologies.\n\n\nABOUT THE PROJECT\n\nWaag is running a two-part pilot a
	t its Amsterdam TextileLab\n[https://waag.org/en/project/tracks4crafts/] t
o reimagine the "craftsperson 2.0"\nand turn embodied traditional craft kn
owledge into open-source knowledge so\nthese crafts don't disappear. The A
msterdam pilot\, "Hacking the Machines\,"\ndevelops an open-source protoco
l to convert a CNC machine into an interactive\nhaptic printing device for
applying bio-based inks and natural dyes to textiles\,\ndrawing on Dutch
	traditions of block-printing\, dot-printing and natural dyeing.\n\n\nABOUT
THE FESTIVAL\n\nThe Ambacht in Beeld Festival ("Craft in Focus") is an an
nual celebration of\ncraftsmanship held in Amsterdam. Running since 2013\,
it has grown into a major\nevent with workshops and masterclasses by craf
tspeople from the Netherlands and\nabroad. What makes it distinctive is th
at the focus is not on selling products\,\nbut on exchanging knowledge and
skills — the mission being to build appreciation\nfor craft among people
of all ages and enable encounters and cross-pollination.\n\nWith over 100
	master craftspeople\, workshops\, masterclasses\, exhibitions\,\ndemonstra
tions\, films and performances\, the festival offers a chance to discover\
ncrafts\, try them out\, and learn new skills. Visitors can try everything
from\nsmithing\, weaving and woodworking to glassblowing\, felting and pa
per-cutting\,\nand there's a cinema showing documentaries about craftsmans
	hip throughout.\n\nThe next edition takes place on 26 & 27 September 2026
	at the NDSM Loods in\nAmsterdam-Noord.
