DESCRIPTION:In this edition of Brain Bites\, we'll delve with political sci
entist Zahra\nRunderkamp in the connection between political life cycles a
nd diversity in\nDutch politics. With more women and citizens from migrant
backgrounds\, amongst\nothers\, now taking their places at the decision-m
aking table\, Dutch politics has\nbecome visibly more diverse in recent de
cades. But visibility\, or presence\, is\nnot the same as inclusion. Join
us to learn something new and for a free\nsandwich during your lunch break
.\n\nIn her research\, Zahra Runderkamp focuses primarily on the question:
what\nhappens after the elections? To answer that question\, during this
	Brain Bites\nsession curated by SPUI25 [https://www.spui25.nl/]\, Runderka
mp will examine the\nconcept of the political life cycle. Political career
s consist of several\nphases\, from interest and selection to election\, e
mployment and departure. We\nnow know a great deal about entrering politic
s\, but far less about how many\npoliticians remain in office and how many
drop out. Yet it is precisely the\nunderstanding of selective dropouts –
when certain groups drop out more\nfrequently or more quickly – that is cr
ucial to determining whether diversity is\nsustainable.\n\nRunderkamp take
s you through this political life cycle and shows how it\ncurrently works
for women. This also involves the working conditions within\npolitics itse
lf. Women in politics navigate a political system that was not\ndesigned f
or them. For instance\, pregnant politicians are still required to\ntempor
arily ‘resign’ in order to go on maternity leave. Runderkamp also explores
\nhow we can work towards ‘genuine’ inclusion\, going beyond mere diversit
y.\n\n\nPROGRAMME\n\n12:15 Walk in\n12:30 Programme’s opening by Revka Bij
ls\n12:35 Mini lecture by Zahra Runderkamp\n12:45 Q&A with Zahra and Revka
\n13:00 End of programme\n\nThe programme is free of charge\, but we do as
k you to sign up due to limited\ncapacity and catering. The event is in En
	glish and takes 30 minutes.\n\n\nSPEAKERS
