SUMMARY:Behind the Opera: Le Nozze di Figaro
DTSTAMP:20260403T174641Z
DTSTART:20260502T180000Z
DESCRIPTION:With Le nozze di Figaro\, Mozart composed a tragicomic classic
that has been a\ncrowd favourite since its premiere in 1786. Mozart and li
brettist Da Ponte\ncombine playful intrigues with existential questions ab
out life and social\ncriticism\, which\, under Kirill Serebrennikov’s dire
ction\, remain as relevant as\never. During this evening\, we will delve i
nto the underlying themes of Mozart’s\nmasterpiece about love\, power\, an
d deceit.\n\nThe opera takes place over the course of one day full of craz
iness. Figaro and\nSusanna are preparing for their wedding\, but their emp
loyer\, Count Almaviva\,\nturns out to have a crush on Susanna. Meanwhile\
	, his wife\, the Countess\, is\nseduced by the young Cherubino.\n\nBeing a
n unconventional director\, Kirill Serebrennikov reveals the passions and\
nmotivations behind the characters in this household\, which presents an o
rderly\nexterior but harbours turbulence on the inside. Bearing resemblanc
e to a\nthriller\, the relationships are pushed to a breaking point. Sereb
rennikov adds\nan extra storyline by splitting the role of Cherubino – a t
eenage boy\,\nconventionally performed by a female singer – into a male an
	d a female\ncharacter. The silent but lively Cherubino—played by a male ac
tor—is brimming\nwith sexual desire yet fails to notice the love that the
	singing Cherubina feels\nfor him.\n\nDuring Behind the Opera\, we’ll take
a closer look at the origins and the staging\nof this work\, and explore t
hemes from the opera: how do you control your\ndesires\, or do your desire
s control you? And how does social criticism affect\nthe making of an oper
a that confronts the viewer with the struggle of releasing\nyour inhibitio
ns?\n\nBehind the Opera is an initiative from De Balie in collaboration wi
th De\nNationale Opera en Ballet. This evening at De Balie offers an intro
duction to\nSerebrennikov’s Le nozze di Figaro ahead of its premiere on Ma
	y 8th.
