DESCRIPTION:kunst Warming Up Festival\n\nIn 2023\, Amsterdam narrowly escap
ed a flood: a malfunction at the IJmuiden\nsluices meant the water couldn'
	t be pumped out. For a moment\, the future arrived\nearly.\n\nFloodlight t
akes you into that future. You see weathered canvases — fabrics that\nhave
themselves passed through water\, dipped in tidal clay\, threaded with me
tal\nwire that rusted in brackish tides\, left at the flood line where sea
weed\,\nfishing line and plastic gather and dry. Onto these surfaces\, alt
ered underwater\nfootage is projected: images from the Amsterdam canals\,
the Oosterdok and the\nwider Dutch coast\, animated into the sensation of
looking up from the seabed as\nlight filters down. The city carries on\, c
hanged and slowly overgrown.\n\nA spatial composition made from hydrophone
recordings surrounds the space: rain\non the surface\, frogs in the Ooste
nburgervaart\, the muffled rumble of trains and\nships\, seaweed crackling
	 at low tide\, a fog buoy\, a shipping forecast drifting\nin from a distan
t radio station.\n\nThe traces of water are already in the canvases. The p
rojected images don't\nerase them but grow out of them — an imagined ecolo
gy layered onto material\nshaped by time and tide.\n\nFloodlight was devel
oped and first presented at Mediamatic.\n\nBy Marjolijn Boterenbrood & Mar
k IJzerman.\n\nA continuous installation can be found downstairs at the en
	trance to\nTolhuistuin.\n\nMarjolijn Boterenbrood & Mark IJzerman\n\nMarjo
lijn Boterenbrood is a visual artist who explores place and space: she\nre
veals what happens beneath the surface of a landscape. Mark IJzerman is an
\ninterdisciplinary artist and composer who\, through installations and au
diovisual\nperformances\, gives voice to the non-human world.\n\nWhat conn
ects them is water: the life it sustains\, its effect on materials\, and\n
how it will transform our city. Floodlight was created during Marjolijn’s\
nresidency at Mediamatic\, on the Oosterdok waterfront.\n\nDe Voorkant
