SUMMARY:All You Need Is Kill (2025)
DTSTAMP:20260502T171422Z
DTSTART:20261114T180000Z
DESCRIPTION:Together with Kaboom Animation Festival we bring the best anime
to the big\nscreen! \n\nFirst came Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s ‘light novel’ in
2004. Ten years later\, we saw\nadaptations as manga\, American graphic no
vel\, and the Hollywood blockbuster Edge\nof Tomorrow. And now\, an anime
directed by Kenichiro Akimoto. Each time\, the\nstory starts over\, but sl
ightly different. Which\, funnily enough\, is exactly the\npremise of All
You Need Is Kill. In its Groundhog Day (1993) meets video game\nconcept\,
each time you die\, your day starts over\, you just know a little bit\nmor
e about what’s coming (something about an alien invader and the total\nann
ihilation of Earth). \n\nThe two most significant changes made by Akimoto
and his team are that the main\ncharacters aren’t military anymore\, but c
ivilian\, and that the lead role has\nshifted from Keiji to Rita. With as
an additional story layer the fact that Rita\n– although the word isn’t ex
plicitly mentioned – is depressed. Which neatly fits\nthe pattern of each
day feeling the same\, and having no interest at all in\ntomorrow. \n\nWhi
ch effectively turns All You Need Is Kill – with all its clearly\nchoreogr
aphed fight scenes and the angular\, sketchy design for which Studio 4°C\n
is known – into a series of therapy sessions (after all\, therapy also req
uires\nendless repetition for even minor progress): unless Rita wants to k
eep dying for\nthe rest of her life (‘Live. Die. Repeat’ was Edge of Tomor
row’s concise\nslogan)\, she has no choice but to take an interest in ever
y single detail of\ntoday in an attempt to finally make it to tomorrow.\n\
nMelkweg often hosts different types of programmes at the same time\, such
as\nconcerts\, club nights and films. Please note that there may occasion
ally be some\nnoise pollution from other programmes during the screening.
