On 19\nSeptember\, as part of a one-day symposium\, Indonesia n exiles in the Netherlands\ncome together to discuss their perspectives o n the ongoing fight to achieve\njustice for the victims of mass atrocities committed by the Indonesian state\nacross Indonesia in 1965 and 1966.\n\n More than two decades after the fall of the Soeharto regime\, the transiti onal\njustice agenda in Indonesia remains fraught with challenges. Despite the\npromises of Reformasi\, there is still insufficient political will t o address\npast human rights violations\, including the anti-communist vio lence of 1965 and\n1966. In this panel\, a sub-group of victims – those fo rced into exile due to\ntheir supposed affiliation with the Indonesian Lef t – share their views\,\nconcerns and hopes for continued advocacy.\n\nThe panel elaborates on the exiles’ interpretations of what happened in\n1965 /1966 and explores the question of an official apology\, why it is central to\nvictims’ demands and why it matters to ongoing efforts towards truth and\njustice. Given the Indonesian state’s persistent failure to acknowled ge past\nwrongs and accept responsibility\, this struggle is likely to bec ome\nintergenerational. The panel therefore also invites second- and third -generation\nfamily members to share their visions for future initiatives.
