DESCRIPTION:On 5 July 2026\, Framer Framed presents A Closer Reading of the
Floating Gardens\,\ndelving into the research of Pennie Key and Radna Rum
ping. Both artists are\nfellows for the 2026 Framer Framed x UvA Political
Science fellowship programme\,\nwhich aims to bridge political sciences w
ith contemporary artistic practices of\npolitical engagement. The afternoo
n features a visit to the buoyant gardens in\nAmsterdam’s Entrepothaven\,
a reading by Rumping and a conversation with Key.\nThrough artistic resear
ch and collective reflection\, the programme seeks to make\nsense of ever-
present yet often abstracted gardens\, exploring the histories\,\nrelation
ships and practices that sustain them.\n\nIn spring 2026\, artist Radna Ru
mping conducted artistic research into the\nEntrepothaven Floating Gardens
and the legacy of Robert Jasper Grootveld – Dutch\nartist\, anti-smoker a
nd magician who spent his life creating floating\nconstructions that elici
ted the power of softness. His gardens still float\ntoday\, coexisting wit
h and sustained by the practices of raft builders\,\ngardeners and local r
esidents. The four floating gardens of Entrepothaven are\nhome to birds\,
bees and mussels. However\, although always present\, they are\nprimarily
experienced from a distance.\n\nThe afternoon begins with a visit to the g
ardens introduced by the\nVlottenbouwers van Amsterdam. Later\, at Framer
Framed\, Rumping shares a working\nessay that explores the layered nature
of the floating gardens in an attempt to\nbring them closer to everyday pe
rception without defining them too narrowly.\nBuilding on her earlier publ
ication Shaky Ground (Stubborn Material)\, Rumping\nalso explores the conc
ept of “stubborn material\,” and how it manifests in\nAmsterdam’s public s
pace. Finally\, a conversation takes place between Key and\nRumping regard
ing their fellowships and their shared interest in the persistence\nof bod
ies and practices within systems of control. Key’s research will be\nprese
nted later this summer.\n\nProgramme\n\n15:00 Visit to the Floating Garden
